PlayMG releases dedicated Android gaming system

When it comes to gaming on Android, most of us are content with using our smartphones and tablets. Still, there are situations in which a dedicated Android handheld might make sense. Those of us with small kids certainly don’t want to give them a free rein playing with our $300+ smartphone or tablet. This is where startup PlayMG steps in with their new Android gaming handheld, dubbed the MG.

This so-called Android gaming handheld really isn’t too different from many of the Android-based portable media players on the market. It has a 1GHz processor, a 4-inch touchscreen and runs on Android 4.0 ICS. Other specs include a 1.3MP front-facing camera, 4GB internal storage and microSD. It also has connectivity options like GPS and Wi-Fi.According to PlayMG, the device is lighter than most other Android devices out there and even has full access to Google Play. While Google Play is a nice touch, a single-core 1GHz processor isn’t much for a gaming device. If you just want something really basic, this should work great with many of the less-intensive casual games out there. I would expect some possible lag on more graphics-intensive offerings, such as Wild Blood, though.

With somewhat mediocre specs, this isn’t going to be replacing any Playstation Vita or Nintendo 3DS hardware. Keep in mind that not everyone needs the power of a major handheld console. If you have relatively basic gaming needs, this could be perfect for you. Best of all, it is quite affordable at just $149 until November 4th. After the promotion ends, the MG will set you back $169.
